Reviews for I Love You, Beth Cooper
Because other than HP looking cute in next to no clothing, this film is a total waste of time. The jokes range from crude, to daft, to offensive. And none of them are funny.
If fun is what you're looking for, you might want to avoid I Love You, Beth Cooper, a drab and incoherent teen comedy.
Hayden Panettiere provokes many emotions as the title object of desire in Chris Columbus's dreadful teen romance. Love is not one of them.
The mixture of obvious jokes and winsome sentiment pretty much robs the film of any guilty pleasure value it might have provided.
As one-crazy-night teen comedies go, it won't be mentioned in the same breath as Superbad, Dazed and Confused, Sixteen Candles or American Graffiti. Or even Can't Hardly Wait.
So much emphasis is put on pratfalling that it leaves the sensitive moments completely stranded, unable to make themselves felt for fear they may get a punch in the mouth.
If watching this makes you long to be young again, you probably grew up in an Algerian prison.
There’s the potential for ‘Superbad’-style comedy when Denis and his pal go on the run with Beth and friends, but the pace is slow and lines fall flat thanks to long pauses and hammy delivery.
The pace is oddly sluggish, the flashbacks are awkward, and most of the risque lines die a death, but there are two reasons to stay with it – Rust himself as the super-dweeb hero and Jack T Carpenter as his movie-quoting best friend.
The story quickly -- and I mean quickly -- devolves into an unimaginative high school retread.
If comedy is all timing, then I Love You Beth Cooper is temporally retarded.
Adapted by Larry Doyle from his 2007 novel, I Love You, Beth Cooper peaks early -- like, during the first three minutes -- and rapidly goes downhill from there.
Perhaps Columbus was involved in a hideous car accident recently that left him brain damaged, or maybe tragic senility is creeping up on the 51-year-old filmmaker. I refuse to believe he willingly created something this monstrously unfunny.
Chris Columbus has fallen off the edge of the earth. His latest film is a misguided ship sailing among an increasingly rocky body of work.
Sign the pre-nup so you can get a refund at the box office. "I Love You, Beth Cooper" has a few moments, but mostly it fails to show us the love.
The movie is cringe-worthy when trying to be humorous, and laughable when it attempts belatedly to make us care about these characters with the depth and humanity of wet cardboard. I hate you, pathetic high school movie.
The characters lack charm and dimension, falling into stereotypical molds. Joyless scenarios bounce between scenes of driving around town and predictable party mayhem.
