Sherman's Way starts with two strangers forced into a road trip of convenience only to veer off the path into a quirky exploration of friendship, fatherhood and the annoying task of finding one's place in the world -- a world in which one wrong turn can change your destination.

The discord begins when Sherman, (Michael Shulman) a young, uptight Ivy- Leaguer, finds himself stranded on the West Coast with an eccentric stranger and washed-up, middle-aged former athlete Palmer (James Le Gros) in an attempt to make it down to Beverly Hills in time for a career-making internship at a prestigious law firm. The two couldn't be more incompatible. Palmer is a reckless charmer with a zest for life; Sherman is an arrogant snob with a sense of entitlement. Palmer is content reliving his past; Sherman is focused solely on his future. Neither is really living in the present. The only thing this odd couple seems to share is the refusal to accept responsibility for their lives.

Director Craig Saavedra brings his witty sensibility into this poignant look at fatherhood and friendship that features indie stalwart James Le Gros in an unapologetic performance that manages to bring undeniable charm to an otherwise abrasive character. --© Official Site [More]

Shulman, though, who also produced, is a personality drag, unable to make us care that Sherman's off-putting arrogance warrants even by-the-numbers enlightenment.

Breezy, harmless and mildly engaging, but ultimately insipid and forgettable.

Not since Larry David's Sour Grapes has a movie kicked off by so thoroughly painting its protagonists as deeply unlikable souls.

Upon learning he can't swim or drive, we know a skinny-dipping scene and driving lessons loom around the bend. So what? LeGros is still funny and the montages and gentle sitcom wit go down more easily in wine country.

LeGros isn't bad, but this pre-DVD road trip feels like it's four hours long.

Note to indie filmmakers: a life-changing road trip, some quirky characters, and a cutesy soundtrack do not a movie make. Or, at least, not one that's worthy of an audience's hard-earned cash.

Cute fish-out-of-water comedy is a lightweight but inoffensive time-waster.

A surprising little low-budget comedy that has heart, smarts and charm.

Like an annoying new puppy, Sherman's Way just wants to run around in circles and lick your face. After a while, though, you kind of fall in love with it.

A victim of its own bad timing, Craig M. Saavedra’s buddy-comedy-cum-road-trip-flick might’ve had a chance back before the world started going to hell.

Sherman’s Way manages to be a road movie that never gets very far because it keeps going around in circles.
