Jay Sherman writes: on Nov 19 2009 04:54 AM Damn, that's pretty bad when you have to retire from directing from because the last movie you worked on put you to shame(Twilight). For what its worth, I thought About A Boy was an excellent movie, never would have thought it was made by the same guy who made American Pie, but I geuss it kinda makes sense. I also thought Antz was better than a Bugs Life, but maybe that's just because I'm partial to Woody Allen and I thought Bugs Life was a bore. (Reply to this) |

Dexter Morgan writes: on Nov 19 2009 05:46 AM Well. I'm not sure what to say, I haven't cared for any of his films but I don't hate the guy. I guess he thinks he'll make enough bank from New Poon to retire on, it shows how much he was interested in directing. (Reply to this) |

Bigbrother writes: on Nov 19 2009 05:50 AM In reply to this comment (#2562629) He didn't actually direct Twilight, he directed New Moon which since it hasn't been released until midnight really hasn't had a chance to "put him to shame". (Reply to this) |

vogonpoet writes: on Nov 19 2009 07:23 AM If he truly loved filmmaking wouldn't he be content to shoot a low-budget indie where lack of studio interference is guaranteed? That way he could show what he's got and build up his resume which so far, with the exception of About A Boy, isn't that impressive. (He thought Golden Compass would be his masterpiece, really? Really?). He clearly has the funds to do it. He should hang out with Soderbergh. They can wipe each others tears away. (Reply to this) |

Shatter24 writes: on Nov 19 2009 07:40 AM I will reserve judgment on whether Weitz retiring is a good thing until after I see New Moon. I did quite like American Pie and About a Boy, though The Golden Compass was a magnificent flop. (Reply to this) |

Dave J. writes: on Nov 19 2009 11:42 AM This is very typical, blaming a studio for a movie's downfall,( if I had a nickel everytime I heard that, I'd be a millionaire, seriously) if the movie did really well, he'd be thanking the studio instead. "The Golden Compass" tanked because some Chritian churches denounced it as anti-religion (even the author who had written the books said the story was intended to be anti- religion), Christians saved there money to see "The Chonicles of Narnia" instead since they were almost released at the same time. The downfall of "The Golden Compass" could be the fact that he decided to direct that movie as opposed to directing something else. I was thinking while reading this is that he should be fortunate that he even got any work in the movie gig when they're so many that are struggling to even get one foot on the door. This is obviously, I'm assuming a result of possibly a hefty pay day from the studio for directing "New Moon". He'll come out of retirement, most of them do!!!!!!!!! (Reply to this) |

frogboy writes: on Nov 19 2009 11:51 AM Golden Compass was an imperfect film for several reasons, but its box office perfromance had more to do with changing movie trends than actual quality or even controversy. This is evidenced by the under-performing second Narnia. There are so many special effects flaming turds that do quite well. I liked the Golden Compass even with it's problems. It's more fun and imaginative than 2012. I don't think Weitz should hang up his megaphone just yet. Maybe he's just being a diva. If he can make a Twilight movie watchable then he *should* continue to make movies. The cast and crew reportedly liked him much more than the previous director. Wow, that first Twilight was terrible and self-indulgent. (Reply to this) |

Bigbrother writes: on Nov 19 2009 05:48 PM In reply to this comment (#2562779) Can't argue with any of your points. I'm not sure what it was about Golden Compass that just didn't work for me. The little girl didn't seem to have a great deal of charisma and to me it just seemed like a lesser version of the Star Wars prequals in terms of problems i.e. the story just didn't quite click except instead of only working when their were lightsabre's on the screen it only really achieved it's potential when their were armored polar bears of flying witch archers on the screen. frogboy writes: on Nov 20 2009 03:41 AM In reply to this comment (#2562931) I think that sums it up nicely. It was a beautiful film to look at, but the focus was all over the place and not always the interesting places. (Reply to this) |
