After having seen the - i know the film critics will kill me for this - in some way disappointing Godfathers and Taxi Driver, I was a little skeptical to watch another "Best Movie Ever Made". But I can tell, this skepticism was for nothing - GoodFellas is not only Martin Scorsese's best movie, it is really one of the best movies ever made. It has a certain wit never seen before. It has surpisingly good actors, a very good story (written by Marty hinself), and one of the best cinematographies to date (by - of course - Michael Ballhaus).
Though it's adapted from a true story, it's not a biopic. Instead, it's a creative and very thrilling piece of work. And what impresses me most is that you can literally feel the inspiration it gave Tarantino for Pulp Fiction. And if a movie has inspired Pulp Fiction in such a way - can it be but a masterpiece?
I think the oscar it recieved (Joe Pesci) is more than deserved, though it would have deserved a lot more. It's certainly better than Dances with Wolves - definitely.
I give the movie a lot of thumbs up and a 28 out of 30 ranking. It's just perfectly staged, it has a great moral and a great cast in the leads.

Good review. This has to be my favorite mafia movie. To me it overshadows the very overrated Godfather movies.

I am with Mark on this one. This and Casino are my favorite two mafia-related flicks by far! Excellent review.
