My Fair Lady: The 2010 Remake

I think this might be very Good. It may not be as good as the original film was, but I think it will suffice as a Good film in it's own right and will revive the popularity of the stage musical. I hope they don't cut the length, or cut any Songs from it, they should just use the whole songbook like the original film did.

Ok it will be more than 150 minutes long, the previous film was 166, but if they cut anything out people who love the musical will preference the original(which they may anyhow).

Keira Knightly is good casting, she may even be able to sing(Hepburn was dubbed).

The original is the greatest musical ever made. A remake is not only unecessary it's downright offensive.

The original is un-watchable. I doubt the remake will be any better.

Coming from someone who despises musicals, that means absolutely nothing.

I love the juxtaposition of Cooper's and Bear's posts.

Having heard Keira Knightley's singing voice, and not being a fan of her acting, I could only hope for Emma Thompson's writing to make it somewhat decent. Not a big fan of the original, but still think Audrey would have done better than Julie acting-wise.

Though who would be Mr. Higgins...

The 1964 version drives me crazy because it has some great stuff interspersed amongst such boring, lifeless cr*p.

As far as lengthy, overblown Hollywood musicals go, My Fair Lady is one of the best. I quite like it, but I have a bias (my adoration of Hepburn). Don't care to see a remake, mainly because of who is involved.

Making this into a period piece would woo the Academy, but it would be a complete waste of time for the rest of us. Joe Wright should modernize the story by making Doolittle some kind of spoiled Paris Hilton-esque MTV idol or something like that.

Meh. I believe Joe Wright is making it, so unless it has some possible depth and a nice trailer, no go for me.

No way. I love musicals, but "My Fair Lady" just does not do it for me. I could probably name you at least twenty stage musicals and ten movie musicals that I think are worlds better than "My Fair Lady."

I got to see the play with Rex Harrison, (but not Audrey Hepburn.)
I know I didn't like it when I was a kid but I guess I saw in 2000 or 2001 again and loved it. I probably haven't seen it since. My stock response to remakes or historical stories which aren't very historical, is they get people to watch or read the original material. Which they might not have gotten around to if the bad remake weren't made.

2.) Songs for a New World Great choice.
3.) Spamalot Overrated.
4.) The Light in the Piazza N/A
5.) Little Shop of Horrors Good
6.) Singin' in the Rain' Yes
7.) Secret Garden Yes
8.) Aida Mmmm.. maybe
9.) Wild Party N/A
10.) Spring Awakening N/A
11.) Thoroughly Modern Millie yes.
12.) RENT No.
13.) Guys and Dolls
14.) Jekyll and Hyde Yes.
15.) Chicago Okay.
16.) Urinetown N/A
17.) West Side Story Mmmm overrated but yes.
18.) State Fair N/A

Oh, I wasn't ranking them, just listing. And yeah, "Titanic" was adapted into a musical in the late 90s, early 00s, and it's pretty good. Maybe as a story it's a bit schizophrenic, but the music is pretty good and it allows for some really great stage effects. I don't loathe "My Fair Lady," it's just a tad boring. Typically I can tolerate "a tad boring," but it doesn't really make up for that with great music. The music is like hand-me-down Rodgers and Hammerstein to me. I do enjoy the relationship between Higgins and Eliza, but at the same time, they both annoy me in a way (Henry Higgins is an ass - he learns his lesson, but he still spends 95% of the show being a pompous ass). I realize these aren't really valid artistic criticisms, but it's a good explanation of why there are at least 20 musicals I enjoy more.

No friggen way...
If that were the case They may as well just make a modern version of Pygmalion...
My Fair Lady is a period peice with appropriate music, to change the setting would ruin the delicate relationship between the music and it's time period. Plus it would alienate the fanbase.

Keira's singing will surfice... Modern recording technology will take care of that, plus I'm not sure she's really that bad anyway. And she could certainly command the emotional range required, I saw "Pride and Prejudice" and loved it(not knowing the source material that well, and not having seen the other versions). She should have won that year in my opinion for such a beautifully restrained and realistic performance. I think that film alone shows that she could pull this off.

Hepburn tried to sing it at first, but the recording sessions were very problematic. You can hear her versions of the songs on the DVD. I think after she brilliantly sung Moon River in Tiffany's they probally thought she could sing the whole songbook, but her voice suits seminal intimate guitar music, not big orchestral musical numbers.

No, the real problem here isn't going to be the cast and crew... it's going to be the Length, I think they'll cut it down and might take out one or two of the songs just to get the film down to 140/150 minutes.. that or they'll "speed up" the plot pacing quite a bit.

Theater is like college: you can always go back and maybe do better the second time. Film is like high school. Enough said. I think you can make something better, but I don't see how much better making the same thing better is. I don't think film you should be iterating toward some one pinnacle of 'bigger, better, newer'. That said, there will probably be worse films made, so I can't say it's the worst thing ever to happen to the world. I'm going to step back now and allow my overwhelming indifference to take center stage. Here it is.

Indifference.

No knock to My Fair Lady the original, but these reboots in Hollywood are getting out of control. Everytime I hear about one being put into production I feel like I have no choice but to throw it in the pile with the rest of them. Investers and studios are going with the money bags on these reboots. Anything that's going to rake in a buck. Having seen just about every original that's been a reboot recently, I feel like they are invading my nostalgic softspot to get to my wallet. I'm not going to show an ounce of respect to any movie reboot coming up until I see a pretty damn good reason to.

End of rant.

"Pater noster, qui in caelis es, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Veniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem nostrum supersubstantialem da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra sicut et nos dimisimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne inducas nos in temptationem, sed libera nos a malo. Amen"

St matthew 6:9 - 13(The Lord's prayer), Latin Vulgate
