SNL should start hiring Hollywood actors.

Think about it for a minute.

There are tons of actors/musicians/comedians who are good at their regular jobs but who absolutely kill on SNL. Justin Timberlake is fast becoming a John Goodman-type SNL player. Dwayne Johnson does a far better impression of OBama than Fred Armisen does. Ryan Reynolds, whose films I enjoy, seemed much more at home during his hosting gig than he does in some of his films. And frankly, SNL is in the toilet right now and could use some new blood.

So what do you all think? Should SNL start hiring real actors while keeping a new host every week, or would that idea just run out of gas too quickly since having celebrities once in a while makes their appearances more excellent? And furthermore, who would you want on the SNL team? The three I mentioned would be welcome additions. It's better than Dwayne doing the Tooth Fairy.

I think there's a totally different lesson to be learned - actors should rehearse their parts before they walk on set to play them. Mike Leigh does it (yes, in his 'improvised' scenes, they improvise them well beforehand and then play them for the cameras), they did it for Shaun of the Dead, etc. Also, Hollywood hires terrible screenwriters.

Um, yes, this is all true and such, but what does that have to do with SNL? I don't think that many of the actors who host SNL are necessarily bad at their jobs. However, every once in a while, you get an actor on there that just totally nails it, and I wonder why SNL can't hire a couple of name actors for the cast. What's Dwayne Johnson got on his plate right now? More family movie bullshiit.

I think it goes against the point of the show, really. It's always been about giving young comedians a chance to shine. That's why it's been such a pipeline for new comedic talent. The hosts are there to be showcased and to utilize their talents (which often outshine the members of the cast), but that's always been the case. I just think it's beside the point. That many of the recent hosts have been better on SNL than in their regular work, however, points to their talent being misused.

Eh, they should just fire the entire writing staff. And Kenan Thompson.

But who would win the mud wrestling match to keep him, Tina Fey or Lorne Michaels?

I can agree with that. I still think that a couple actors should be brought in. MAybe even just one at first, so they can keep the core of new comedic talent. But it is true that it might ruin the balance of the show between the seasoned veterans and the new kids.

Either way, I want Dwayne Johnson on the show and away from movies for a while.

An entirely different show with all seasoned veterans and an unknown talent as host each week would be funny. Not sure who you could get to write it, though. I mean, preferably the great writers whose work has been too noncommercial to ever get produced and as such have been toiling away in secret on projects that won't be released until they have died and will then make posthumous craters in the cultural landscape after their explosions - that is, unless they get hired for some late night TV show and let out a bit of steam before they lose motivation on their great world-shaking project and we forget that they ever existed. Perhaps this is not a good idea. Let's forget I even spoke of it.

Johnson does do a good Barack Obama, I was really impressed, they have similar voices as well

I think an all celebrity SNL, written by the staff that was around in the 90's, would be pure gold. DO it every other week or once a month to give them time to do other projects, and do crossovers and whatnot. Gold mine.

Jeff Goldblum is doing some Law and Order show or something. It's embarrassing for humankind. Val Kilmer has like 30 different projects lined up, apparently, but one of them is MacGruber. There's your headliners. Best show ever? Best show ever.

You don't mess with success. SNL is like theater in how it's meant as a platform to highlight new talent (that'll eventually be taken by Hollywood, like Bill Murray or Steve Martin or Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, etc). It'd be a backwards cycle having Hollywood actors on full-time, that's like me upset at Hollywood movies like Lion King going to Broadway. If anything they need quality writers as well finding the next Tina Fey or the guy who does those SNL digital shorts.

Good points. Yeah, they just need a better vision of what they want "funny" to be. I don't know what's going on there, but it's obvious that their system is flawed from the execs down.

Not Val Kilmer, but I think if Jeff Goldblum was like a recurring host/special guest, like Alec Baldwin, that would be hilarious.

The guy who directed Hot Rod is the 'next Tina Fey'? Well, I guess that could be true. I despise 30 Rock.

Hot Rod took a while to grow on me - I hated it the first time I saw it, and I'm sure it won't grow on everyone. That movie aside though, Samberg has been the thread that kept SNL from completely falling apart in recent years. Not every digital short is a winner but but for the most part he's been a phenomenal influence.

Last week, I saw a film, as I recall it was a horror film...

Dunno about Hot Rod, but those digital shorts are usually incredible. I haven't watched 30 Rock, not much of a tv person and the show's ads tend to keep me at bay.

I've heard nothing but good things about that, like it's another Anchorman-type comedy. I didn't like Adam Samberg at first, but he's really grown on me himself.

He has a very dry humor that is great. I remember loving his talk show appearances back in the day.

It's a silly movie with a very original and distinct sense of humor. After I sort of let it in, I was laughing my ass off. It has great actors too like Ian McShane and Sissy Spacek.

Most of my friends hate it. It's quite honestly one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

It would have to be like Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock in that they could only do it if the celebrity hit rock bottom. People tend to move on from television and if they don't make it go back to television and if they make it again go back to film. So here's hoping Tooth Fairy destroys Dwayne Johnson's career.

Last week, I saw a film, as I recall it was a horror film...
I love Andy Samberg, so I agree, but I am skeptical on Hot Rod. Very skeptical. I mentioned it only because of its infamy.

It's all about the performances, plot is kicked to the curb. Clifford with Martin Short is one of my favorite comedies though, so take that for what it's worth.
